Background of the Study

Political parties are essential to democratic consolidation as they serve as vehicles for political representation, governance, and policy formulation. In Nigeria, dominant parties such as the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have shaped the nation’s political landscape through their activities at both national and local levels. Chanchaga Local Government Area (LGA) in Niger State exemplifies the dynamics of party politics, with the APC and PDP playing significant roles in electoral processes and governance. The structures of these parties are instrumental in candidate selection, voter mobilization, and policy advocacy (Ibrahim & Adamu, 2024). However, questions remain about the extent to which these parties genuinely promote democracy, given issues such as internal party conflicts, a lack of inclusivity, and limited citizen engagement (Okeke et al., 2023). This study examines the role of APC and PDP in promoting democratic ideals in Chanchaga LGA, shedding light on their contributions and shortcomings.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

While political parties are expected to act as pillars of democracy, their performance in fostering democratic governance in Nigeria often falls short. In Chanchaga LGA, the APC and PDP have faced criticism for prioritizing party loyalty over democratic principles, limiting citizen participation, and undermining transparency in their operations (Audu, 2023). Moreover, internal conflicts and elitism within these parties have raised concerns about their commitment to inclusivity and grassroots development. These challenges necessitate an evaluation of the roles played by APC and PDP structures in promoting democracy within Chanchaga LGA. By addressing this issue, the study seeks to contribute to the discourse on strengthening party systems in Nigeria.

  3. To evaluate the impact of political party activities on citizen participation in Chanchaga LGA.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. How do APC and PDP structures contribute to democratic governance in Chanchaga LGA?

  2. What challenges hinder political parties from promoting democracy in Chanchaga LGA?

  3. What is the impact of political party activities on citizen participation in Chanchaga LGA?

1.5 Research Hypotheses

  1. APC and PDP structures significantly contribute to democratic governance in Chanchaga LGA.

  2. Political parties face significant challenges that hinder their role in promoting democracy in Chanchaga LGA.

  3. Political party activities positively influence citizen participation in Chanchaga LGA.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study is significant for political stakeholders, researchers, and civil society organizations interested in strengthening democratic practices in Nigeria. By focusing on the APC and PDP in Chanchaga LGA, the study highlights practical strategies for enhancing party structures and operations to promote inclusivity, transparency, and accountability. Policymakers can use the findings to address systemic weaknesses within political parties, while researchers can explore comparative studies on party dynamics across other LGAs. Civil society organizations can leverage the findings to advocate for reforms that enhance the democratic roles of political parties.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study focuses on the APC and PDP structures in Chanchaga LGA, Niger State. It examines their roles in promoting democracy, with an emphasis on local-level dynamics.
